Best Porch Window Style

Question: What is the best type of replacement windows for my porch?

Answer: While you can use any style of replacement windows on your porch, slider replacement windows are the most popular style. Normal Sized Windows Are A Myth

Question; Are my windows the "normal size" or will I have to custom order them?

Answer; Some areas of the country have "popular window sizes" while other areas of the country have a wide variety of window sizes. Some homes have two window sizes, one size for the bathroom windows and another size for the rest of the house. Other homes have one size for the front of the house, one for the sides, a different size for the bathrooms, a different size and style for the kitchen and in some cases a different size for the upstairs windows.

How Much Do Basement Windows Cost?

Basement Window Cost

Replacement basement windows can cost you from $200-$600 each for the window, labor and new trim. Another important factor is how many windows you are doing at once. Generally you will get a lower price if you replace all of your basement windows at once.

Hopper basement windows are generally the cheapest basement window and awning basement windows are the most expensive. If you want decorative basement windows then you can add a couple of hundred dollars to your price tag. If money is not a factor consider some nice stained glass windows, beveled glass windows, leaded glass windows or windows with brass designs.

Will Replacement Windows Reduce Sound?

Replacement Windows and Sound Reduction

Question: Will new replacement windows reduce the noise from outside of my home?

Answer: I can honestly say that I have never installed replacement windows without my clients commenting on how some of the outside noises seem to fade away. Generally before we start a job we will ask the homeowners to listen to the street traffic from inside of their home. Once we are done we ask them if they notice a difference and everyone claims that they don't really hear the traffic anymore.

The science behind sound reduction is something that I have an interest in however I do not have a degree in that field. People actually study how sound waves travel over the open air and through surfaces of different density. Some sound waves are blocked by dense materials while others are blocked by soft materials. In the window industry we use glass thickness and the spaces in between glass in order to reduce sound. Laminated glass is also used since it has excellent sound reduction properties.

.

If you live on a busy street ask your window company about sound reducing windows.

Ordering Time For Replacement Windows

Question: How long does it take to order replacement windows?

Answer: It depends on a bunch of factors such as the time of the year and the contractors backlog of current clients. 3-5 weeks is the industry norm for window companies that maintain proper staff levels. In some cases I have seen lead times as long as 10 weeks during a couple of the annual "window buying seasons". If your looking for new replacement windows this year you should start your search today!

Good luck on your project and remember to order your windows before the window season is in full swing.

What are the Standard Window Sizes?

Standard Window Sizes

Question: What are the standard window sizes?

Answer:Standard window sizes are a myth, while everyone talks about standard sizes in fact they do not exist. Last week I looked at windows that were over 8' tall and 36" wide, I also looked at a basement window that was only 11"x16". Most professional window companies will custom order all of your windows so that each window will fit the opening perfectly. Some of the home centers will stock a few "stock sized" windows for hacks who will "make it work somehow". In the long run the perfect sized window for your opening will fit better, last longer and look better from both the inside and the outside.
